James Gunn Drops Colon from Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow has been officially retitled as simply Supergirl following confirmation from DC Universe chief James Gunn.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn detailed the rationale behind this change, which mirrors the recent rebranding of July's Superman: Legacy to Superman. He explained that his creative team employs a "premortem" analysis process where they identify potential pitfalls before production begins - during which the Superman: Legacy title first raised concerns.

"I'm constantly refining," Gunn stated. "The Legacy subtitle became questionable during our premortem session - a process where the team collaboratively identifies potential failure points months before shooting begins. We ask: 'If this project fails spectacularly, what current decisions might cause that?' Everyone speaks freely during these sessions, which often reveals unspoken concerns about casting choices or production issues."

He continued: "The Superman: Legacy title, despite originating from me, raised concerns. I've grown tired of the superhero-movie-colon-subtitle format. Moreover, while the film deals with legacy themes, the title felt backward-looking for a forward-facing project. The team unanimously agreed we should simplify it."

Directed by Craig Gillespie with a screenplay by Ana Nogueira, Supergirl stars Milly Alcock in the titular role. While details remain scarce (Alcock has maintained secrecy in recent interviews), Jason Momoa has playfully teased his highly anticipated Lobo costume for the film - prompting an amused response from Gunn.

Supergirl - now officially titled without the Woman of Tomorrow subtitle - is scheduled for release on June 26, 2026.
