George R.R. Martin has hinted at the possibility of an Elden Ring movie, but acknowledges a significant hurdle to his involvement. The Game of Thrones author conceived the world and history for FromSoftware's Elden Ring, a 2022 bestseller. FromSoftware and Bandai Namco heavily featured Martin's contribution in promotional materials, crediting both him and Hidetaka Miyazaki with creating the game's world.
While sidestepping questions about an Elden Ring sequel, Martin revealed discussions about an Elden Ring film adaptation during IGN Fan Fest 2025. This isn't the first such tease; FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki has also expressed openness to an adaptation, but only with a "very strong partner" to handle the production. Miyazaki cited FromSoftware's lack of experience in film production as the reason for needing external expertise.
However, Martin highlighted a potential obstacle: his ongoing work on The Winds of Winter. He admitted his current focus on completing the long-awaited sixth book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series may limit his participation in an Elden Ring movie. The considerable delay in The Winds of Winter's release, over a decade after the previous book, has led to speculation about its completion. Martin himself acknowledges the significant delay and the resulting public anticipation.
Martin further elaborated on his Elden Ring contribution, explaining his role in world-building. FromSoftware sought his expertise to establish the game's backstory, providing context for the present-day events players experience. He collaborated with the team over several sessions, contributing ideas about the game's magic and runes, and was impressed by their creative interpretations of his concepts.
He confirmed that not all of his world-building material was used in the game, suggesting potential for future installments or adaptations. He drew a parallel to Tolkien's extensive background material, emphasizing the vast amount of lore typically generated during the creation of epic fantasy worlds.
