Capcom Producer Hints at Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Original Character Returns
Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto has fueled speculation about the return of beloved original characters from Marvel vs. Capcom 2, sparking excitement among fans. Speaking at EVO 2024, Matsumoto stated that a return in a future game is "always a possibility," particularly given the upcoming release of the "Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics."
This remastered collection, including Marvel vs. Capcom 2, features three original characters: Amingo, Ruby Heart, and SonSon, largely absent from recent entries beyond minor cameos. Matsumoto believes the collection's release will reintroduce these characters to a wider audience, potentially generating enough interest for their inclusion in future titles like Street Fighter 6 or other Capcom fighting games.
"If there is enough interest in these characters, who knows? Maybe there is a chance they could appear in Street Fighter 6 or another fighting game," Matsumoto stated. He highlighted that this resurgence of interest could significantly benefit Capcom's creative process, expanding the pool of characters available for future projects.
The "Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection" itself is the culmination of years of planning and collaboration with Marvel, overcoming previous obstacles to finally bring these classic titles to modern gamers. Matsumoto also expressed Capcom's desire to create a new Versus series title and re-release other legacy fighting games on current platforms, indicating a broader strategy to revitalize their fighting game library.
Matsumoto emphasized the importance of reintroducing these classic titles to a new generation of players, acknowledging the challenges involved in collaborating with external partners and the time required for such projects. He concluded that re-releasing these classic games is the best way to currently energize the community and gauge interest for future projects.
