A haunted mansion, shadowy creatures, and a quest to rescue your grandmother—it sounds like a classic spooky adventure game. But MindLight is much more. Developed by PlayNice, it's an action-adventure game designed to help children manage stress and anxiety through biofeedback.
What is biofeedback? It's a mind-body technique that can enhance both physical and mental well-being. In this game, your emotions directly influence the play. Stay calm, and the dark mansion brightens. Feel anxious, and it remains shrouded in shadow and dread.
MindLight Goes Beyond Gaming
The game was co-developed by Dr. Isabela Granic, a co-founder of PlayNice and the lead scientist on multiple randomized controlled trials involving over a thousand children. These studies revealed that children who played MindLight saw their anxiety levels drop by at least half.
The premise is straightforward. You play as a child exploring your grandmother's estate, now consumed by darkness. Using a special headset, the game monitors your brainwaves or heart rate in real time. Your inner calm generates light to navigate the halls and repel frightening creatures.
While primary testing focused on children aged 8 to 12, PlayNice reports that even older kids and parents find it engaging. Because the game adapts instantly to each player's unique stress responses, the experience remains personalized and dynamic for everyone.
Two Ways to Play
To start with MindLight, you or your child will need two key items: the Neurosky MindWave 2 EEG headset and a subscription to the game itself. Two subscription plans are available—one for a single child, and another for families with up to five players.
You can download MindLight from the Google Play Store. It's also offered on the Amazon Appstore, the Apple App Store, and directly through PlayNice's website.
