Spider-Man 2 Debuts to 'Mixed' Steam Reviews Amid Serious PC Performance Problems

Author : Christopher Feb 27,2025

Spider-Man 2's PC port, despite promising initial performance benchmarks, has received a mixed reception on Steam, plagued by numerous technical issues. A significant portion of user reviews (45% negative) cite frequent crashes, even on high-end systems equipped with RTX 4090 GPUs and the latest drivers.

One RTX 4090 user reported consistent crashes, while another declared the game "completely unplayable" due to crashes every five minutes. Many reviewers advise waiting for performance patches before purchasing, highlighting issues such as: cutscene lighting failures, extremely low frame rates in cutscenes, audio desynchronization, freezing, stuttering, and general performance instability. One user even requested a refund due to the game's state.

The primary problem seems to be frequent graphics driver crashes, often accompanied by an error message suggesting outdated drivers, excessive graphical settings, GPU overheating, or a game-related error.

PlayFurther complaints include malfunctions in DLSS and ray tracing, extended loading times, missing textures, and persistent audio problems. Some players report performance degradation and eventual crashes after extended play sessions, possibly indicating a memory leak.

Nixxes Software, the porting studio, acknowledged the crashes on the Steam forums, directing users to their support website for troubleshooting guides and requesting logs and crash dumps for faster diagnosis. They also addressed a bug affecting photo-op missions, suggesting lowering graphics settings or resolution as a temporary fix if frame rates drop below 20 FPS.
