Discussing the story might be best avoided—it's formulaic, dull, and fails to engage. However, it's no secret that players dive into Monster Hunter for reasons other than narrative. While the protagonist finally has a voice, the payoff is questionable; the dialogue often feels generic, as if generated by AI, which players must endure for six full in-game chapters.

As noted, the series' true appeal lies not in its plot (which primarily serves as an extended tutorial) but in the intense, drawn-out, and exhilarating battles against a diverse roster of uniquely designed monsters.

The story follows a protagonist (chooseable as male or female) exploring uncharted territories as part of an expedition, prompted by the discovery of a lone child named Nata in the desert. These lands were presumed barren, but the boy's presence hints at hidden inhabitants.

He is the only survivor of a tribe ravaged by a mysterious entity known as the "White Ghost."

The attempt to frame these events as a drama sometimes veers into the absurd. The local inhabitants, who have lived for generations without developing weaponry, are baffled by the hero's use of such tools.

Overall, the narrative in Wilds is more structured and cohesive, with richer world-building details and refined delivery. Yet, it still doesn't qualify as a fully story-driven experience.

Furthermore, the game frequently restricts player freedom, enforcing a rigid script. By the ten-hour mark, the linear progression can become tiresome.

The main campaign spans roughly 15–20 hours. For players seeking open-ended hunting, the story may feel more like a hurdle than a motivator. Fortunately, most dialogue and cutscenes can be skipped—a welcome feature for those, like myself, who prefer to jump straight into the action.

Hunting mechanics have been streamlined. Successive hits create wounds on a monster. Executing a specific combo shatters these wounds, dealing massive damage and causing monster parts to break off, which are now auto-looted—a convenient and praiseworthy quality-of-life improvement.

New ridable companions, called Seikrets, offer major benefits. They automatically sprint at top speed toward your quarry or any map marker. The developers' focus on accessibility is evident: if you're knocked down, calling your Seikret results in a near-instantaneous rescue, bypassing long recovery animations and saving you from potentially fatal follow-up attacks.

This feature has been a lifesaver in numerous clutch situations where my health was critical. Being swiftly carried to safety allows for a quick weapon swap or a healing potion. While it's a simplification, I consider this change a positive one.

I also appreciate how the Seikret autonomously navigates to the destination, eliminating the need to constantly open the map to check the route.

Fast travel to camp is also available, with the game conveniently prompting the option when you hover over the tent icon.

Another key point: monster health bars remain absent, consistent with series tradition. Players must gauge an enemy's condition through its movements, animations, and sounds. Wilds adds a twist: your Palico companion will vocally announce changes in the monster's state.

Monsters exhibit smarter tactics, utilizing the environment more effectively by burrowing into crevices or scaling ledges, particularly newer species. Some creatures now hunt in packs, creating dynamic multi-monster encounters.

Even in these chaotic fights, there's no need to panic. You can always call for backup—either real players or NPC allies—who will assist in taking down the threat, even in solo play. Hunting is more enjoyable and efficient with a team.
