The successful launch of Avowed has sparked excitement about the future of the franchise. With solid sales numbers, both Microsoft and Obsidian are thrilled, and the game's director, Carrie Patel, has hinted at exciting possibilities for expansions or sequels. Dive into the details to discover what's next for this captivating world.
Avowed Director Wants To Do More With The World They Built
Possibility of Expansions or Sequels
Following the successful release of Avowed, Game Director Carrie Patel expressed her enthusiasm for the game's future in an interview with Bloomberg on February 22, 2025. While Obsidian hasn't officially announced any plans, Patel's passion for further exploring the rich universe they've created is palpable. "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it," she said, hinting at potential expansions and sequels.
Changes in Avowed During Development
The journey to bring Avowed to life was filled with challenges and significant changes. Patel candidly shared that the development process was "messy" but ultimately rewarding. Starting in 2018, the project faced hurdles as Obsidian navigated its transition to becoming a part of Microsoft, announced in 2020. The game underwent a major reboot in January 2021, with Patel taking the helm. Under her leadership, the focus shifted to enhancing the narrative and lore from the Pillars of Eternity series, moving away from an open world to more detailed, open zones.
Patel reflected on the experience, noting, "There’s this interesting thing I’ve seen on every project I’ve worked on or seen during my time at the studio — things are messy, messy, messy, then they start coming together." Her insights reveal the complexities and eventual triumphs of game development.
Obsidian Wants Pillars of Eternity Tactics
With Avowed reigniting interest in the Pillars of Eternity universe, Obsidian is exploring new avenues within the franchise. During a Twitch livestream on February 23, 2025, Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Director Josh Sawyer unveiled the studio's interest in developing a tactics game, tentatively titled Pillars: Tactics. Sawyer highlighted the enthusiasm within the studio for this project, stating, "Pillars: Tactics is a thing that a lot of people would like, a lot of people at the studio would like to work on; there are a lot of people who like tactics games."
However, he acknowledged the challenges in defining the project's scope, including team size, visual quality, and overall scale. Despite these hurdles, the interest in Pillars: Tactics is strong, especially with the franchise's renewed popularity thanks to Avowed.
Sawyer also expressed his ambition to create Pillars of Eternity 3 with a substantial budget akin to that of Baldur’s Gate 3, which would be a significant leap from the budget of Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire.
