Crysis 4 Development Halted Amidst Crytek Layoffs

Author : Adam Feb 18,2025

Crytek, facing challenging market conditions, announces layoffs impacting 60 employees, approximately 15% of its 400-person workforce. The decision, announced via a tweet and statement from founder Avni Yerli, follows the postponement of Crysis 4 development in late 2024 and efforts to consolidate resources around the growing Hunt: Showdown. Despite Hunt: Showdown's success, cost-cutting measures proved insufficient to maintain financial stability, necessitating the layoffs.

Yerli's statement emphasizes the difficult nature of the decision and assures affected employees of severance packages and career support. Crytek remains committed to Hunt: Showdown's continued growth and development, along with its CRYENGINE technology.

The layoffs affect various teams, including development and shared services.

The news follows the previously unannounced cancellation of a battle royale-inspired Crysis project, Crysis Next, which was scrapped in favor of Crysis 4. The Crysis franchise, renowned for its visually stunning graphics and demanding system requirements, has not seen a new mainline entry since Crysis 3 in 2013. While remasters have been released, details on Crysis 4 have been scarce since its initial announcement three years ago. The "But can it run Crysis?" meme, born from the original game's high system demands, remains a testament to the series' legacy.
