Sony Unveils teamLFG: New PlayStation Studio from Bungie, Developing Team-Based Action Game with Fighting, MOBA, and 'Frog-Type' Influences

Sony has recently unveiled a new PlayStation studio named teamLFG, sparking excitement with the announcement of its debut game. In a detailed post on the PlayStation Blog, Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment's Studio Business Group, revealed that teamLFG was born out of Bungie, the studio behind Destiny and Marathon. The team is currently working on what Hulst describes as an "ambitious" incubation project, which he is eagerly anticipating.

The name teamLFG, which stands for 'Looking For Group,' hints at the studio's focus on social gaming. Their first game is described as a team-based action game that draws inspiration from a diverse range of genres, including fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and "frog-type games." This game will immerse players in a lighthearted, comedic world within a brand-new, mythic, science-fantasy universe.

"We are driven by a mission to create games where players can find friendship, community, and belonging," teamLFG stated. The studio aims to foster a sense of community where players log on to find their teammates already online, recognize familiar names, and create memorable moments that become the stuff of legends and memes. "We want our players to love remembering that one time where they pulled off That Play that changed the whole story of the match. As we say on the team – dat’s da good stuff."

The studio is committed to building immersive multiplayer worlds that players can engage with for countless hours, learning, playing, and mastering the game. They plan to involve the community in the development process through early access playtests, ensuring they can react to player feedback not only before launch but throughout the game's live service, fostering growth and evolution over time.

Following Sony's acquisition, Bungie faced challenges in meeting financial targets with Destiny 2, leading to layoffs affecting around 100 employees in November 2023. A subsequent round of layoffs in 2024 impacted another 220 people, or 17% of the studio's workforce, with 155 being reassigned within Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was during this restructuring that the incubation project was spun off into teamLFG.

Late last year, a former Bungie lawyer praised Sony's role in implementing changes to Destiny 2, suggesting that the parent company's influence was beneficial. Since then, Bungie has fully unveiled the extraction shooter Marathon and outlined the future roadmap for Destiny 2. However, there are no plans for Destiny 3, and a Destiny spinoff project, Payback, has been canceled.
