Bethesda Game Studios has clarified its reasoning behind labeling Virtuos' newly launched The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered as a remaster rather than a remake.
The renowned RPG developer took to X/Twitter to explain the distinction between remaster and remake when applied to their classic fantasy title. In a detailed statement, Bethesda emphasized its deliberate choice to preserve the original experience while enhancing it with modern technology.
"We intentionally chose not to remake it - but to remaster it," the studio stated. "Our goal was to maintain the game you remember, just viewed through today's technological lens."
The clarification comes as players get their first official look at Oblivion Remastered and begin hands-on gameplay. The release includes comprehensive visual upgrades alongside key gameplay improvements. Notable additions include a sprint function and a revised leveling system that blends elements from both the original Oblivion and Skyrim.
The extensive modifications have led some players to question whether the project qualifies more as a remake. While the gaming industry has seen numerous remasters offering minimal visual touch-ups in recent years, Bethesda maintains its position that this 2021-initiated project doesn't constitute a full remake.
"We meticulously reviewed every component for upgrades," Bethesda explained. "However, preserving the core experience was paramount. This remains a game from a previous era and should reflect that."
The studio added: "We're excited for longtime fans to return to Cyrodiil, and equally thrilled to introduce new players to this classic. When you emerge from those Imperial sewers, our hope is that everyone - regardless of prior experience - feels that same sense of wonder."
