The Duskbloods will have players assume the role of a Bloodsworn, but it's important to clarify that this is not Bloodborne 2. Dive deeper to explore FromSoftware’s vision for The Duskbloods and its unique features.
FromSoftware Will Continue To Create Single-Player Focused Games
The Duskbloods Director on Nintendo’s Creator’s Voice Blog
FromSoftware, the renowned developers behind Elden Ring, have reassured fans that they will continue to produce their signature single-player games, akin to the critically acclaimed Soulslike series, even as they venture into multiplayer projects. They recently unveiled their upcoming exclusive for the Nintendo Switch 2 during the April 2 Nintendo Direct: The Duskbloods, an online multiplayer PvPvE game that retains the Soulslike themes and aesthetics. This announcement comes as a surprise, especially with another multiplayer title, Elden Ring Nightreign, on the horizon.
In the latest edition of Nintendo’s insider blog, Creator’s Voice, published on April 4, FromSoftware's Director Hidetaka Miyazaki addressed the company's future direction. He emphasized that despite the upcoming multiplayer titles, FromSoftware remains committed to crafting their traditional single-player focused experiences.
Miyazaki stated, "I want to clarify one thing: although The Duskbloods is fundamentally an online multiplayer title, it does not indicate a shift in our company's focus towards multiplayer games exclusively." He further added, "With the announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Elden Ring, we reaffirm our commitment to continue developing single-player games that embody our traditional style."
The Importance of Blood in The Duskbloods
Miyazaki shed light on the game’s characters and setting, which revolve around the theme of blood. Players will control "Bloodsworn," members of a faction endowed with superhuman abilities derived from special blood. While comparing these characters to vampires, Miyazaki noted that they would not be portrayed as monstrous figures.
In The Duskbloods, Bloodsworn compete for "The First Blood," which emerges only during "The Twilight of Humanity," an event occurring across various times and locations.
Miyazaki described the game's settings, stating, "The environments range from traditional Gothic and Victorian styles to scenes from the closing years of the early modern period, like the train scene shown in the trailer."
He further explained the significance of blood in the game: "Blood represents a core theme—its history, the power it bestows, the destinies it intertwines, and the symbol of those who transcend human limitations."
Wide Variety of Characters and Online Multiplayer
The trailer for The Duskbloods showcased a diverse array of characters, each with distinct designs and personalities. Miyazaki confirmed that players would have over a dozen characters to choose from, with some level of customization available. He remarked, "The unique elements in character designs and weaponry should help players find their favorites."
At the game's hub, players can select and customize their characters before entering online multiplayer sessions that support up to 8 players. After each match, players return to the hub to collect their rewards, primarily used for further character customization.
Matches typically end with a last-player-standing scenario, though certain conditions may alter the victory criteria. Players might need to defeat a formidable boss or navigate through special circumstances.
Miyazaki elaborated, "Whether it’s PvP or PvE, our goal is to offer an experience where players can learn and refine their skills. The PvE boss encounters are designed to be challenging, fostering a sense of achievement upon victory."
He also introduced the concept of "roles" within the game, where players have specific responsibilities and objectives. While some details remain undisclosed, Miyazaki provided examples such as the "Destined Rivals" role, requiring players to locate and defeat their rival, and the "Destined Companion" role, where players must find a partner to form a bond and earn special rewards.
He further explained, "Roles can be assigned through blood customization, allowing players to engage in role-playing and enhancing the drama of their encounters."
The Creator’s Voice blog offered valuable insights into FromSoftware’s plans for their exclusive Nintendo Switch 2 title.
