Elden Ring Nightreign Ditching Popular FromSoftware Feature

Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messaging System

FromSoftware has confirmed that Elden Ring Nightreign will not feature an in-game messaging system, a staple of the Soulsborne series. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki (in a January 3rd interview with IGN Japan), is a practical one. The fast-paced, multiplayer-focused design of Nightreign, with anticipated play sessions of around 40 minutes, leaves insufficient time for players to read and write messages.

The asynchronous messaging system, a hallmark of FromSoftware games, has been integral to player engagement, fostering community interaction and creative uses. However, Ishizaki explained that this system wouldn't fit the intended experience of Nightreign.

Preserving Asynchronous Features

While the messaging system is absent, Nightreign will retain and enhance other asynchronous elements. The bloodstain mechanic, for example, will return, allowing players to learn from others' deaths and even loot their fallen counterparts. This reinforces the game's focus on a more streamlined, intense experience.

A "Compressed" RPG Experience

FromSoftware aims for Nightreign to be a "compressed RPG," prioritizing consistent intensity and multiplayer interaction. The game's three-day structure contributes to this goal, minimizing downtime and maximizing variety within a shorter playtime. This contrasts with the often sprawling, hours-long gameplay sessions of the original Elden Ring.

Release Window

Elden Ring Nightreign's release is targeted for 2025, as revealed during The Game Awards 2024. A more precise release date is yet to be announced by FromSoftware and Bandai Namco.
