Monster Hunter Wilds: A Deep Dive into the Starting Equipment
Many Monster Hunter players cite crafting new equipment from hard-earned hunt materials as a major source of excitement. The satisfaction of a complete, matching armor and weapon set is a hallmark of the series. This equipment crafting system, central to the Monster Hunter experience since its inception, hinges on a core concept: harnessing the power of slain monsters through equipment crafted from their remains. Players conquer powerful beasts, then integrate those beasts' strengths into their own arsenals to become even stronger.
In an interview with IGN, Kaname Fujioka, Executive Director and Art Director of Monster Hunter Wilds, elaborated on the design philosophy: "While our designs are now more diverse, we previously focused on the idea that wearing Rathalos equipment would make you look like a Rathalos." Wilds introduces new monsters, each contributing unique and visually striking equipment. Rompopolo, a mad scientist-inspired creature, boasts head armor resembling a plague doctor's mask, showcased in the hunt video below.
However, the developers emphasize the significance of the starting equipment. Fujioka stated, "I designed all 14 starting weapon types from scratch – a first for me. Previously, new hunters began with rudimentary weapons. But our protagonist is a chosen hunter, so plain weapons wouldn't fit. I wanted even the starting equipment to feel exceptional."
Yuya Tokuda, Director of Monster Hunter Wilds, added, "In Monster Hunter: World, weapon designs maintained a consistent form, with variations based on monster materials. In Wilds, each weapon boasts a unique design." The starting weapons reflect the player's status as an experienced hunter tasked with investigating the Forbidden Lands. The starting armor, the "Hope" series, also received meticulous attention to detail.
Tokuda explained, "The Hope armor's design is so striking, it could be used until the game's end without feeling outdated." The deep emerald green Hope set transforms into a hooded long coat when fully equipped. Fujioka described the design process: "We dedicated more effort to the Hope series than any other equipment. Previous games separated upper and lower body armor, preventing the creation of a coat. We overcame this limitation in Wilds, investing significant resources to achieve a flowing hooded coat design. While players will discover diverse equipment, we wanted the Hope series to be stylish yet understated."
Starting with such meticulously crafted equipment is a luxury. The 14 starting weapons and the Hope series are designed to reflect the attire of a truly exceptional hunter. We eagerly anticipate examining their details in the final game.
